Hood River County wants to bring the Magic of Books to disadvantaged Kids...

First Book is a national nonprofit organization with a simple mission:  to give disadvantaged children the opportunity to read and own their first new books.  The primary goal of First Book is to work with existing community based tutoring, mentoring and family literacy programs to distribute new books to children who, for economic or other reasons, have little or no access to books to keep for their own.

Since 1997 more than 159,000 books have been distributed to 26,500 at-risk children throughout the state.  Locally, in Hood River County since January 2000, the First Book Local Advisory Board has given 1686 books to 230 children participating in 6 literacy and child development programs.  Examples of programs that have received First Book books include: New Parent Services, Early Head Start, May Street Elementary, Pine Grove Elementary, Parkdale Child Development Center and NORCOR.
