- Mosier
Twin Tunnels
It's a fun 5-mile paved hike that is open year
round. It's very family friendly with panoramic views of the
Gorge. Hikers & bikers are welcome!
To
find the Hood River trailhead, take Hood River exit 64 off of
I-84 to Highway 35 south, then go east on a drivable section of the
Historic Columbia River Highway (near the China Gorge Restaurant)
for about one mile to the Twin Tunnels Visitors Center and the Mark
O. Hatfield Trailhead West. To find the east Mosier entrance,
take I-84 to exit 69. Follow
the signs to Highway 30 and Mosier. Go north on Rock Creek Road
about a half-mile to the Mark O. Hatfield Trailhead East. Access
to the trails is free. A $3 Oregon State Parks day-use permit
is required to park at either trailhead.
- Cooper
Spur
Great family hiking is available from the Cloud
Cap Area from Cooper Spur. Trails 600, 600A and 600B are
all beautiful trails in the Mt. Hood National Forest. Find
great views of Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood, the Elliot Glacier and
more. From
Highway 35 and take Road 3510 towards Cooper Spur Ski Area. Take
the Switchback Road up to Cloudcap to find the trailheads.
- Horsetail
Falls and Oneonta Gorge
This is a great family hike with young children. It's
a 2.7 mile loop with about 400 feet elevation gain.
The trial takes you to a cavern behind Ponytail Falls. To get
there take I-84 east of Portland to Ainsworth Park exit 35, turn
right and follow the old scenic highway 1.5 miles back to Horsetail
Falls Trailhead parking area. The trail starts beside 176-foot
Horsetail Falls.
- Horsethief
State Park Trail

Access to the petroglyphs trail is available ONLY through a guided tour
which MUST be made well in advance. Tours on Friday 10am For educational
groups and Saturday 10am for general public. Recreation includes fishing,
hiking, windsurfing, rock climbing, swimming and picnicking.
- Beacon
Rock State Park & Rodney Falls
Beacon Rock is located on
the Washington side of the river, just west of North Bonneville on
Washington Hwy. 14. Parking is available on the south side of the Highway. The
trail leads up the western side of Beacon rock, following a series
of ramps.
This trail offers spectacular views of the Columbia
River Gorge looking west and east. The trail to Rodney Falls is
located off Highway 14 opposite Beacon Rock...drive 0.3 mile up a
paved road toward the campground, and then veer to the right into
a trailhead parking lot. The trail takes you through second-growth
Douglas fir, red thimble berries, blue Oregon grape, and bracken
fern.
- Tanner
Creek Falls Trail
Drive west on I-84 to the Bonneville Dam Exit. Turn
left, go under the freeway and drive about 75 feet to the parking
area. Walk
along the road that parallels the east side of Tanner Creek. Continue
for about 1 mile up the trail to Tanner Creek Falls.
- Eagle
Creek Trail
Drive west on 1-84 to the Eagle Creek Park Exit
#41, turn left and follow the signs to Eagle Creek Trail. This
popular family hike has a moderate grade for 2.1 miles to the popular
Punch Bowl area.
- Tamanawas
Falls Trail
Drive south on Highway 35 to the trailhead just
north of Sherwood Campground. Cross bridge over the east
fork of the Hood River to trailhead, also the start of the 'East
Fork' trail. Tamanawas Falls trail follows a stream and is
shaded by Douglas Fir, Cedar and a variety of deciduous trees & shrubs. Loop
hike also possible connecting with Pollalie Creek trail.
- Lost
Lake area Trails
There are several trails worth exploring in the
Lost Lake area, accessible from County Road 13 off of the Dee Highway. The
Lakeshore trail is an easy 3.2 mile hike around Lost Lake with
spectacular views and picnic areas. Other trails include
a 1 mile walk through an Old Growth Forest and a 2 mile hike
to the top of Lost Lake Butte, also with spectacular views.
